PAP facilitator job description
--------------------------DRAFT---------------------------
Introduction
The project for which this job has been created is to engage as many Bellarine people as possible working on rabbit population control. This means knowing about how to control rabbit populations is not the priority but connecting to and engaging people in the process is the job. It should always be remembered that it is the responsibility of the landholder to control rabbits and it is not for the BLG to do the work.
The facilitator will work one day per week, or the equivalent thereof. The job will require the facilitator to be well versed in the Rabbit Sweep project, to know how it relates to other rabbit projects undertaken by the BLG, and how it integrates with other projects conducted by others. In particular, a working relationship with the VRAN, the department of agriculture (Agriculture Victoria), the CoGG rabbit program, and the participants of the BCN. The facilitator will not be expected to provide on-ground works advice but rather to know where and to whom someone should go if they have an expertise question, a contracting task, etc.
To safely work on outside rabbit projects with others, event convenors should follow a set of guidelines that cover the admin aspects of such work - registration and OHS briefing of volunteers, aims and risks, participation of 'experts' and contractors, before-and-after reporting of any events, and more. The BLG facilitator will be asked to provide a list and an explanation of it so the Rabbit Sweep facilitator can develop a handy, online form for the admin of group events. The facilitator will show others how to use the form so they can do the admin work for their events.
It appears that the most effective way to engage people is to invite them to participate in a demonstration exercise and to learn from those present, expert, experienced, and otherwise, about the various aspects of the event. As the goal is to increase the number of participants, events will probably be better if they are smaller, say less than 20 people in all and the aim will be to engage others, leaving them to choose how they work on their problem and with whom in the future. When new groups want to start the process, the facilitator will schedule some training once there are enough people - say 6 - 8, to ensure the events are safe, pleasant, effective, and the convenors will encourage others to organise their own events.
On the Bellarine there are numerous interest groups as well as the many government agencies that have members - these members are the target of the Rabbit Sweep, being asked to help with the work because they too, are landholders and have rabbits or have neighbours in such a position. Because these people are not always familiar with the kind of activities they will need to participate in, the facilitator will be asked to up-skill their convenors in this regard. Hence the emphasis on admin of events. Initially, the groups to be invited to work with the Rabbit Sweep will be groups that are members of the BCN but there are many other groups, and there are many people not affiliated with a group. In particular, engaging younger people will become a priority - the environment will be inherited by the young generations and their interest in its biodiversity, biosustainability, etc., is ultimately paramount.
